(2) Jan Christoffel Jegher

(b Antwerp, bapt 3 Nov 1618; d Antwerp, between 12 Dec 1666 and 18 Sept 1667). Son of (1) Christoffel Jegher. Early in his career he worked for Plantin and produced, as one of his first works, their colophon, based on a design by Rubens. In 1643–4 he was accepted as a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke. He executed printers’ signs, ornamental letters, alphabets, small book illustrations and woodcuts with images of ceremonial processions based on his own and other designs. Abraham van Diepenbeeck, Erasmus Quellinus (ii) and Anthonis Sallaert provided the designs for Jan Christoffel’s successful woodcuts of the Life of Christ in Jodocus Andries’s Perpetua crux (Antwerp, 1649). Although adept at working on a small scale, Jan Christoffel lacked the skills of his father.

Part of the Jegher family
