Ho Yu [ho Soch’i; Noch’i; Ho Ryon]

(b Chindo, South Cholla Province, 1809; d Chindo, 1892). Korean painter. He was born in the house of a ruined regional aristocrat and learnt to paint as he grew up simply by looking at albums. When he was 28 Ho visited a Son (Chin. Chan; Jap. Zen) Buddhist master, Ch’oui Sonsa, at Taehung Temple in the neighbouring county of Haenam. The master became Ho’s teacher and, under his guidance, Ho developed new insights into painting and calligraphy. In 1838, following the master’s recommendation, Ho went to study under KIM CHONG-HUI in Seoul, where he came into contact with the higher echelons of the literati painting world. In his later years he painted a Portrait of Kim Chong-hui (hanging scroll, ink and light colours on paper, 519*247 mm; Seoul, Ho-am A. Mus.; see 1984 exh. cat., pl. 255).
