Hoflehner, Rudolf

(b Linz, 8 Aug 1916). Austrian sculptor and painter. He attended the Staatsgewerbeschule für Maschinenbau (1932–6) in Linz and studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule (1936–8) in Graz, before entering the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna. After serving in World War II he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule (1949–51) in Linz. In 1951 he moved to Vienna and until 1954 worked in Fritz Wotruba’s studio. Under his influence Hoflehner developed a style of simplification, reducing a work to its geometric foundations, which were only meaningful as a composite entity when in the context of their space. Like Wotruba’s, his sculptures grew from the human figure. However, instead of solidity, he gave the individual components great lightness and fragility, so that they appear more buoyant and mobile as they penetrate space.
