Hodges, Charles Howard

(b London, 23 July 1764; d Amsterdam, 24 July 1837). English painter and printmaker active in the Netherlands. He was the son of a miniature painter and grew up in artistic circles. In 1782 he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in London. After a visit to the Netherlands with the art dealer William Humphrey (?1740–?1810), Hodges, decided to settle there. In 1792 he moved to The Hague, where in 1793 he joined the artists’ confraternity Pictura. Initially Hodges concentrated on mezzotint engravings, mostly after the work of English masters (Reynolds, Romney, Hoppner and others), but he soon achieved fame with his portraits in oils and pastel.
