Heylan.

Flemish family of engravers, active in Spain. Francisco Heylan (b Antwerp, 1584; d Granada, 1650) was trained in the tradition of Flemish engraving and was influenced by the three Wierix brothers, Hans Collaert and Hans Strasser. He arrived in Seville c. 1606 and late in 1611 moved to Granada, where he enjoyed considerable success as an engraver–typographer, founding a school where from 1616 he directed the Imprenta de la Real Cancillería. The high quality of his work is evident in the plates of Plataforma de Granada, containing fine views of the city, and Sección de la Capilla Mayor of Granada Cathedral (both after 1616). Bernardo Heylan (b Antwerp, 1588; d Granada, 1661), Francisco’s brother and pupil, accompanied him to Spain. A series of engravings of the Immaculate Conception are his best works. Bernardo’s son José Heylan (d ?Granada, 1676) was also an engraver. Francisco’s sister or daughter Ana Heylan (b Antwerp; d Granada, 29 April 1655) was active from 1637, specializing in engravings of the Virgin and Child for religious books. She probably collaborated with Francisco.
