Heise, Jacob

( fl ?Königsberg [now Kaliningrad], 1654–63). German amber-carver. He is known through three signed and dated works: two amber nautilus cups (1654, ex-Königsberg, Kstsamml. Stadt, untraced; 1659, Dresden, Grünes Gewölbe) and a bowl (1663; Budapest, Mus. F.A.). All three pieces are rich in figurative carving and evince a sculptural use of the material. The cup of 1659 and the bowl are signed Jacob Heise ... Königsberg ..., although it is not known whether he belonged to the guild of amber-carvers in Königsberg, as no records of members between 1643 and 1710 are extant. Other works in amber have been attributed to him on the basis of style or been linked to his circle, for example the figure-group of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, and his consort Luise Henriette (Kassel, Hess. Landesmus.) and a two-handled bowl (London, V&A).
