Handmann, (Jakob) Emanuel

(b Basle, 16 Aug 1718; d Berne, 3 Nov 1781). Swiss painter. He studied under Johann Ulrich Schnetzler (1704–63) in Schaffhausen from 1735 to 1739. He then went to Paris to work in the studio of Jean Restout II, who decisively influenced his work. In 1742 Handmann travelled through France, finding employment in a portrait partnership with Hörling in which Handmann painted the heads. He completed his studies in Italy, working principally in the studios of Marco Benefial and Pierre Subleyras in Rome, where he copied antique and Renaissance masterpieces. By June 1746 he was back in Switzerland and, apart from a trip to Germany in 1753, never again left his native land.
