(2) Hans Gudewerdt (ii)

(b Eckernförde, c. 1600; d Eckernförde, 12 Feb 1671). Son of (1) Hans Gudewerdt (i). He contributed significantly to the development of Baroque sculpture in the Holstein region, surpassing his father in the art of wood-carving. In 1634 he was already well established as a master wood-carver; in 1635 he succeeded his father as head of the family workshop. His work for Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (reg 1616–59), included decorations for ducal residences at Gottorp and Husum; between 1649 and 1654 he is known to have received commissions for four bridal carriages. However, his most notable work was on religious commissions. He decorated a number of church interiors in the region, most notably that of the Nikolaikirche in his native Eckernförde, to which he contributed some important pieces. The earliest known is the Sleeping Death-watch (1632), a naked putto resting on a skull, while holding an hour-glass. This was a popular motif in northern European art, especially in Schleswig-Holstein, and may have derived from a design by Dürer. Another early example, dated 1636, is a relief carving of a coat of arms, which formerly was part of an elaborate tomb decoration.

Part of the Gudewerdt family
