Greither [Greitter; Greitther; Greuter], Elias, I
(b 1565–70; d Weilheim, 9–11 Nov 1646). German painter and draughtsman. He is first mentioned in 1591, when he painted the Betbergkapelle of SS Salvator and Sebastian at Weilheim using the secco technique. A panel of the Holy Family (Weilheim, Stadtmus.) dates from 1604; he was in Augsburg, painting barrels and polychroming Hans Degler’s three monumental wooden altars and pulpit at SS Ulrich and Afra between 1604 and 1608. He painted for the Benedictines at Andechs and Benediktbeuren (1610–11); worked under Peter Candid on the Munich Residenz (1614–16), painting frescoes on the vaulting of the Kaisertreppe and background painting for the Vierschäftesaal; and painted three altarpieces for the pilgrimage church at Hohenpeissenberg (c. 1618). He was back in Weilheim in 1627, assisted by his son Johann in frescoing Mary Encircled by the Seven Angels in the compartmented octagonal cupola of the parish church of Mariae Himmelfahrt. The Augustinians commissioned an altarpiece of the Baptism of St Augustine (1623) for the parish church at Polling, and a Deposition (c. 1630–35) for SS Peter and Paul, Beuerberg, near Wolfratshausen—the latter freely interpreted from a work by Daniele da Volterra.
