Gombos, Stjepan

(b Sombor, 10 March 1895; d Zagreb, 29 April 1975). Croatian architect. He studied at the Technical Faculty of the University of Budapest and worked in Hugo Ehrlich’s studio in Zagreb between 1924 and 1931. From 1931 to 1941 Gombos was in partnership with MLADEN KAUZLARIC, and together they won several architectural competitions, including those for the headquarters of the Pensions Fund in Svacic Square, the Jewish Hospital, Farmers’ Union building and the refurbishment of the Grand Café Corso, all in Zagreb. They also designed residential buildings and villas in Zagreb and on the Dalmatian coast, as well as the celebrated City Grand Café (1933) in Dubrovnik. In 1951 Gombos became the chief architect of the Plan group in Zagreb. From 1950 to 1954 he was a lecturer at the architectural faculty, Zagreb University. During this time he designed and built the Rade Koncar and Prvomajska factories in Zagreb.
