Gol’ts, Georgy (Pavlovich)

(b Bolsheve, Moscow region, 6 March 1893; d Moscow, 27 May 1946). Russian architect. Before World War I, he enrolled at the prestigious Moscow Ninth Gymnasium, a school renowned for its teaching of the Classics, ancient literature, history and art. After briefly serving in the army, he entered the painting faculty of Vkhutemas (Rus.: Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops), Moscow, transferring after a year to architecture and joining the unit led by Nikolay Ladovsky, later one of the founding members of the Asnova group (Rus.: Association of New Architects). Gol’ts’s Diploma project for a garden city in 1922 gave him the opportunity to travel to Italy, where he studied the work of Brunelleschi. On his return to Moscow he became interested in the attempt of Ivan Zholtovsky to develop an architecture based on a revival of Italian Renaissance ideas, and subsequently worked with him in 1927–9 and 1934–5. He was also briefly associated with OSA (Rus.: Union of Contemporary Architects).
