Girometti, Giuseppe

(b Rome, 7 Oct 1780; d Rome, 17 Nov 1851). Italian gem-engraver, sculptor and medallist. He was one of the most important gem-engravers of the first half of the 19th century. In 1812 he was elected to the Accademia di S Luca in Rome as an engraver of hardstones and was awarded numerous prizes. In 1822 he was appointed, together with Giuseppe Cerbara, as Head Engraver at the papal mint. His early sculptures include four statues for Foligno Cathedral and several portrait busts (Florence, Pitti). He produced an enormous amount of glyptic and medal work and executed more than 60 medals for popes Pius VII, Leo XII, Pius VIII, Gregory XVI and Pius XI, as well as at least 15 medals for private clients and public institutions. He adopted a number of Classical elements, creating an original style that helped to revive the Roman art of medal-making.
