It is likely that they refer to the artist identified on the basis of the Crucifix (3.0*2.3 m; Mercatello, S Francesco), inscribed JOHES PICTOR FECIT HOC OPUS/FR. TOBALDI and dated 1309 or 1314 (Volpe); the earlier date is largely accepted today.
