Gignous, Eugenio

(b Milan, 4 Aug 1850; d Stresa, 30 Aug 1906). Italian painter. He attended the Accademia Brera in Milan from 1864, studying landscape painting under Luigi Riccardi (1808–77). He was influenced by the example of Gaetano Fasanotti (1831–82) and Carlo Mancini (1829–1910) and, subsequently, by the work of Antonio Fontanesi and the painters of the Scuola di Rivara. Of Gignous’s early work, the portraits of the 1870s were influenced by the work of his friends among the Scapigliati, Tranquillo Cremona and Daniele Ranzoni. Until he married in 1881, Gignous travelled and exhibited extensively, showing work at the Weltaustellung in Vienna in 1873 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878. Important paintings from this period include Rustic Courtyard at Colombera (1870; Milan, Mus. Milano) and Flowers in the Cloister (Milan, Brera).
