Ghirlandaio [Bighordi, Bigordi; del Ghirlandaio, Ghirlandajo, Grillandai].

Italian family of artists. (1) Domenico Ghirlandaio and (2) Davide Ghirlandaio are first mentioned in the 1457 Florence tax declaration (catasto) of their grandfather Currado di Doffo Bigordi and stated to be nine and six years old respectively. Their brother (3) Benedetto Ghirlandaio is recorded as ten years old in the tax declaration of 1470. Their father Tommaso (b 1422) had three other children, and the extended family lived near S Lorenzo on the Via dell’Ariento, Florence. They also owned a small farm near San Martino a Scandicci, outside Florence, which was worked by a labourer and produced a modest yield of grain and wine. The tax declarations of 1470, 1480 and 1498 reveal a prosperous family of artisans and small businessmen.
