García Guerrero, Luis

(b Guanajuato, 18 Nov 1921). Mexican painter. He practised as a lawyer in Mexico City before enrolling in 1949 at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Mexico City, and the Escuela de Pintura Escultura y Grabado ‘La Esmeralda’, also in Mexico City. His landscapes, usually in small format, were strongly influenced by Cézanne and depicted in detail the countryside around Guanajuato and Mexico City (The Three Kingdoms of Nature, oil on wood, 1982; Mexico City, Gal. A. Mex.). He also produced still-lifes, which were realistic and characterized by a uniform, warm light; they reveal great simplicity, precision and delicacy. In his portraits Guerrero often painted workmen and farm labourers, and he emphasized the expression of the eyes. He exhibited throughout Mexico, and frequently at the Galería de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City.
