(4) Cornelis Galle (ii)

(b Antwerp, bapt 23 Feb 1615; d Antwerp, 18 Oct 1678). Engraver and publisher, son of (3) Cornelis Galle (i). He was a pupil of his father and became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1638–9. The engraved oeuvre of Cornelis Galle (ii) is extensive and consists chiefly of prints after such artists as Rubens (e.g. Crucifixion, Hollstein, no. 9, and the portrait of Justus Lipsius, Hollstein, no. 177) and Anthony van Dyck (e.g. the portrait of Jan Meyssens, Hollstein, no. 181). It is often difficult to separate his prints from those of his father, and it is very rare to find the epithet ‘junior’ next to the signature. However, the son’s engravings are distinguished by their freer technique and style.

Part of the Galle family
