Gaddi (i).

Italian family of painters. Three generations were active in Florence. (1) Gaddo Gaddi, who established a thriving workshop, was a contemporary and apparently a friend of Giotto. His son (2) Taddeo Gaddi is believed to have been trained by Giotto. Taddeo was a highly successful painter, and tax records show that he enjoyed a comfortable financial position in the last two decades of his life. His four sons were mentioned in a lost tax record (1376) from the neighbourhood of S Pier Maggiore in Florence. Three of them were painters: (3) Giovanni Gaddi, (4) Agnolo Gaddi, the most productive and successful, and Niccolò Gaddi, of whom very little is known. Taddeo’s fourth son, Zanobi Gaddi (d 1400), does not appear to have followed the same profession.
