(2) Lucas Franchoys II

(b Mechelen, 28 June 1616; d Mechelen, 3 April 1681). Painter and etcher, brother of (1) Pieter Franchoys. Like his brother, Lucas probably underwent further training in Antwerp after initial studies with his father. De Bie said that Rubens was his master for many years, though there is no other evidence for this. He is first mentioned as a painter in 1649 in connection with commissions for churches in Tournai, where he lived for some years. Works executed in this period include the Adoration of the Shepherds (1650; Tournai Cathedral). Cornelius de Bie mentioned a six-year stay in France, perhaps a confusion arising from Tournai’s proximity to the French border. He returned to Mechelen by 1654 and painted altarpieces and other religious compositions for many of the churches, monasteries and convents there (e.g. the St Roch altarpiece, c. 1671; Mechelen, St Janskerk). One of his patrons was Archbishop Alphonse de Bergues, whose portrait he painted.

Part of the Franchoys family
