Elte, Harry

(b Amsterdam, 3 Sept 1880; d Theresiënstadt, 1 April 1944). Dutch architect. He trained at the Ambachtsschool (Technical School) and at the Avondtekenschool voor Gezellen (Evening School of Drawing for Craftsmen) in Amsterdam. Between 1896 and 1899 he worked for various offices including that of Gerrit van Arkel. From 1899 to 1909 he worked for H. P. Berlage, after which he established himself as an independent architect. Most of his work is in Amsterdam, for example the house at Stadionweg 44 (1928–9), which is characteristic of his architecture. His style was influenced by that of Frank Lloyd Wright, which can be seen in the synagogue on the Jacob Obrechtplein (1928). Elte composed the component volumes of his buildings in an emphatically plastic manner and made use of strongly horizontal overhanging roofs and canopies. This phase of his work corresponds with other orthogonal styles then current in the Netherlands, particularly in The Hague, which form a bridge between the Amsterdam school and the Rationalist architecture of the 1930s. Elte joined Groep 32 in 1932 and then Architectengroep de 8. In 1941 he worked with other members of the latter, including Ben Merkelbach and Mart Stam, on reconstruction plans for the Hofplein and Blaak areas of Rotterdam. Elte died in a concentration camp.
