Eberlein, Johann Friedrich

(b Dresden, 1695; d Meissen, 20 July 1749). German sculptor and modeller. After training as a caster and carver in England, he joined the Meissen Porcelain Factory in 1735 as principal assistant to the Modellmeister Johann Joachim Kändler. Together they collaborated on the conception and creation of the ‘Schwanenservice’ (1737–41; Meissen Porzellanmus.; see MEISSEN, fig. 2) for Heinrich, Graf von Brühl. He also modelled his own creations, the most successful of which were the series of Classical gods and goddesses on High Baroque socles, dating from c. 1747. Owing to his close working relationship with Kändler, it is difficult to separate their work and obtain a clear picture of Eberlein’s artistic powers and achievement.
