Croatian group of artists, architects and intellectuals active in Zagreb from 1929 to 1935. The original group included the painters Krsto Hegedusic, Omer Mujadzic (1903–91), Kamilo Ruzicka (1898–1972), Ivan Tabakovic (1898–1977) and Oton Postruznik (1900–78); the sculptors Antun Augustincic (1900–79) and Frano Krsinic; and the architect Drago Ibler. They aimed to defend their artistic independence against foreign influences such as Impressionism or Neo-classicism and against dilettantism and Art for Art’s Sake. They maintained that art should mirror the social milieu from which it springs and should meet contemporary needs, hence their emphasis on the popularization of art, both at home and abroad. In spite of its ideologically heterogeneous membership, the group was Marxist in orientation but never espoused Socialist Realism.
