Dunikowski, Ksawery [Xawery]
(b Kraków, 24 Nov 1875; d Warsaw, 26 Jan 1964). Polish sculptor and painter. He began studying c. 1895 at the sculptural studio of Boleslaw Syrewicz at the Royal Castle, Warsaw. In 1896–9 he attended the studio of Alfred Daun and then in 1899– 1903 the studio of Konstanty Laszczka, both sculptors from the School of Fine Arts, Kraków. From 1904 to 1910 Dunikowski taught sculpture at the School of Fine Arts, Warsaw. In 1914 he went abroad, firstly to England, then France. He returned to Poland in 1922 and took over the chair of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kraków (to 1939 and again between 1946 and 1955). During World War II he was interned in Auschwitz concentration camp. From the mid-1950s onwards he lived in Warsaw and commuted to Wroclaw where he ran the sculpture studio at the State Higher School of Plastic Arts. He exhibited from 1895 both at home and abroad (e.g. at the Venice Biennali of 1920 and 1954), winning many prizes and distinctions. He held many scholarships and received the highest Polish decorations.
