Dieussart [Dusart; Dysart], François

(b Arquinghem, nr Armentières, c. 1600; d London, 1661). Flemish Walloon sculptor. He was probably already a fully-fledged sculptor at the time of his arrival in Rome, recorded in 1622 in the register of the Brotherhood of S Giuliano dei Fiamminghi, a charitable foundation run by and for the Flemish colony in the city; by 1630 Dieussart had become its proviseur. While in Rome he called himself Francesco Vallone (i.e. Walloon), to emphasize that he came from French Flanders. A Crucifix and an ivory statuette of the Woman of Samaria, as well as a plaster statue to Bernini’s design for the catafalque of Cardinal Carlo Barberini (all untraced), are the only works recorded from his prolonged stay in Rome.
