De Koninck, Louis Herman

(b Brussels, 31 March 1896; d Brussels, 21 Oct 1984). Belgian architect and designer. He completed his architectural studies at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, in 1916. Disappointed by what he considered an old-fashioned syllabus, he decided to continue his education at the Ecole Industrielle, Brussels, enrolling for the course on reinforced concrete. The thorough scientific knowledge that he acquired on this material became the basis for his researches into industrial standardization and into prefabrication. At the same time he worked for the architect Gabriel Charle (d 1919) and then for Albert Callewaert (1888–1957) under whom he drew up lists of war-damaged farms in the Brabant region of Belgium, an apprenticeship that familiarized him with the patterns and principles of traditional rural architecture.
