Davey, William Turner

(b 1818; d c. 1890). English engraver. He was a pupil of Charles Rolls ( fl c. 1820–55). He ultimately became known for his reproductions of such celebrated pictures as Henry Nelson O’Neil’s Eastward Ho! August 1857 (1858, priv. col.; declared for publication by Lloyd Bros & Co. in Nov 1860) and its companion Home Again (1859, priv. col.; declared by Moore, McQueen & Co. in Sept 1862). One of his most brilliant achievements was the large engraving in mixed mezzotint of Lady Butler’s Return from Inkerman (Hull, Ferens A.G.), for which he received £1100. The print was commissioned by the Fine Art Society and declared for publication in April 1878. Davey exhibited 13 pieces at the Royal Academy between 1859 and 1884.
