(3) Jean-Baptiste Corneille
(b ?Paris, 2 Nov 1649; d Paris, 12 April 1695). Painter and engraver, son of (1) Michel Corneille (i). He studied under his father and then with Charles Errard le fils. A precocious student, in 1664 he won a gold medal at the Académie Royale. From 1665 he was in Rome, later returning to France to work as a history painter. He became a member of the Académie Royale in 1675 with Busiris Making a Sacrifice to the Idols (Paris, Ecole N. Sup. B.-A.). In 1679 he married Madeleine, daughter of the well-known printseller Pierre Mariette (ii), through whom he learnt about engraving.
