(1) Jan Wellens de Cock

(b ?Leiden, c. 1490; d Antwerp before 19 Jan 1527). Painter and draughtsman. He is believed to be the painter who became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1503 under the name Jan van Leyen. In 1506 he took on a certain ‘Loduwijck’ as his student, and in 1516 Wouter Key ( fl 1516–42) was apprenticed to him. In 1507–8 Jan was paid for painting angels and restoring the Holy Ghost in Antwerp Cathedral. He and Joos van Cleve became joint deans of the guild in 1520. His widow, Clara von Beeringen, was mentioned on 19 January 1527 as the wife of the landscape painter Frans Vermeer.
