Caroto.

Italian family of painters, prominent in Verona during the first half of the 16th century. (1) Gian Francesco Caroto, who is the better known of the brothers on account of his greater productivity, travelled widely, and his work is noted for its eclecticism. His younger brother (2) Giovanni Caroto’s development is, in contrast, gradual, conservative and based on local sources. There are some disputed attributions between the two brothers, but these appear to derive from the mistaken assumption that works of lesser quality can be assigned to Giovanni. Fewer works can be assigned with confidence to him, but these are more consistent in quality than Gian Francesco’s more numerous paintings. There appear to be only two clear instances of collaboration.
