(2) Henrik [Hinrich; Hinrik] Bornemann

( fl Hamburg, 1490; d Hamburg, 1499). Son of (1) Hans Bornemann. In 1490 he received payments from the town of Stade for completed works and in 1496 was established as a master in his own workshop. His Calvary panel (c. 1497; Hamburg, Ksthalle, ex-Katharinenkirche), painted for Tile Nagel (d 1491) and his wife Tibbeke Köting (d 1503), has background scenes of the Passion; the smoothly painted groups of figures seem to lack cohesion. On the wings of an altar of St Luke (1499; Hamburg, Jakobikirche), Bornemann’s contribution was limited to the outsides of the wings showing the Virgin with the patroness, his mother Gerburg (later painted over by Absalon Stumme and changed to a representative image with angels), and the unusual picture of St Luke Painting the Virgin, to which Henrik Bornemann himself was added in miniature after his death, with an intercessional text, when the work was completed by Wilm Dedeke of Lübeck, who took over his workshop; the transition can be seen clearly.

Part of the Bornemann family
