(2) Schelte [Schelderic] (Adamsz.) (à) Bolswert

(b Bolsward, c. 1586; d Antwerp, 12 Dec 1659). Brother of (1) Boetius Bolswert. He was probably a pupil of his brother in Amsterdam. He engraved a number of prints after such artists as Vinckboons (e.g. Christ Entering Jerusalem, 1612; Hollstein, no. 14), Gillis van Coninxloo III and Abraham Bloemaert. He moved to the southern Netherlands and in 1617 was working for the publishers Plantin–Moretus in Antwerp. Schelte devoted himself mainly to religious prints (e.g. the Life of St Augustine series, 1624; Hollstein, nos 201–28) and became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1625–6. Until 1627 he worked in Brussels and Antwerp on Gérard Thibault’s Académie de l’espée (Leiden, 1628; Hollstein, no. 327).

Part of the Bolswert family
