Biardeau, Pierre

(b Le Mans, 4 Dec 1608; d Angers, Oct 1671). French sculptor. Like his father René Biardeau ( fl 1614–34), he was principally a sculptor in terracotta, working in the tradition of such sculptors from the Maine region as Mathieu Dionise ( fl 1581–1613), Gervais Delabarre ( fl 1593–1642) and Charles Hoyau (d 1644). His brother, also named René Biardeau, sculpted statues of the Virgin (c. 1638) to be set above the city gates of Le Mans. But Pierre’s large output was dominated by pious images intended for Baroque retables.
