Bendemann, Eduard (Julius Friedrich)

(b Berlin, 3 Dec 1811; d Düsseldorf, 27 Dec 1889). German painter. He studied (1827–30) under his brother-in-law, Wilhelm Schadow, the Director of the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie. Schadow’s influence on Bendemann was long-lasting and can be seen in the painting Grieving Jews in Exile (1832; Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz-Mus.). Inspired by the work of Karl Friedrich Lessing, the painting excels in attention to detail, freshness of vision in the landscape passages, rich colour and moving exposition of its subject. Its style, a combination of lyricism and naturalism, served as a lasting model for the Düsseldorf school.
