Baumann, Povl (Erik Raimond) [Raimund]

(b Copenhagen, 9 Nov 1878; d Tibirke, 3 July 1963). Danish architect. In 1899 he enrolled at the Polytechnical Institute of Denmark to study structural engineering but broke off his studies to become an architect. In 1900, after serving an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he was admitted to the School of the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1902, together with Ivar Bentsen and Carl Petersen, he left the academy in protest against the conservative teaching and joined P. V. Jensen-Klint. In 1903–4 he participated in excavations at Lindos, on Rhodes. He returned to Denmark and in 1909 was one of the co-founders of the Free Architects’ Association (Fri Arkitektforening) of which he was chairman until its dissolution in 1919. By then the architects had attained their objective, and it was generally accepted that architecture should follow the development of society and should acknowledge general rather than individual needs.
