Asam [Asamb; Asum].

German family of artists. (1) Hans Georg Asam, a Bavarian painter familiar with the Italian High Baroque, helped train his sons (2) Cosmas Damian Asam and (3) Egid Quirin Asam to become outstanding exponents of German Baroque art in the earlier 18th century. His wife Maria Theresia and daughter Maria Salome (b Benediktbeuren, 7 Feb 1685; bur Munich, 24 June 1740) worked with them on occasion. Cosmas Damian specialized in painting ceiling frescoes and altarpieces while Egid Quirin specialized in stuccowork and sculpture. Both also worked as architects, and Egid painted, but in their realizations of the GESAMTKUNSTWERK or total work of art, combining all categories, it is sometimes impossible to say who did what. Their principal collaborations to this end, at Weltenburg Monastery (1716–35), St Johann Nepomuk in Munich (1729–45) and the Ursulinenkirche at Straubing (1736–9), are discussed in §II below.
