Armas, Ricardo

(b Caracas, 1952). Venezuelan photographer. He was self-taught and dedicated himself to photography from 1972, first working for the magazine Escena (1974–6) and then for the Galería de Arte Nacional in Caracas (1976–8). His first exhibition, Acercamiento a Zitman, was held at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Sofía Imber, Caracas, in 1976. He lived in New York from 1979 to 1983 and studied at the International Center of Photography; from then on technical and formal growth and transformation became evident in his work, demonstrating a particular taste for the dramatic effects of the medium and for the narrative power of black-and-white photography. He went on to work as a photographer for the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Sofía Imber in Caracas.
