Arcangelo di Cola (di Vanni) da Camerino

( fl 1416–29). Italian painter. From Macerata, he is first documented in 1416, when he received a payment for frescoes (destr.) in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio in the Palazzo Pubblico, Città di Castello. By 1420 he was in Florence, where he enrolled in the Arte dei Medici e degli Speziali and the Compania S Luca. In June 1421 he was commissioned by Ilarione de’ Bardi to execute an altarpiece (untraced) for S Lucia dei Magnoli, Florence. A predella panel of the Martyrdom of St Lawrence (Venice, Fond. Cini) and two pinnacle panels of the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Annunciate (New York, priv. col.) may be from this altarpiece. Around the same time he received payments for a painting intended for the parish church at Empoli, but this was never completed. He was in Rome in 1422, where he executed work (untraced) for Pope Martin V and may have contributed to the decoration of the nave of S Giovanni in Laterano for the Jubilee of 1423. Arcangelo returned to the Marches early in 1423, and his last documented painting was a signed triptych of the Crucifixion with Saints (1425; destr. 1889) for the monastery of Isola di Cessapalombo, Macerata: it is recorded in a photograph (Venturi). A fresco fragment of St George and the Dragon in the church portico of the monastery has also been attributed to him. He is last documented in Camerino, in 1429.
