Ansuino da Forlì [Ansuyn da Furlì]
( fl Padua, 1451). Italian painter. A document dated 30 Oct 1451 records a payment for a fresco, signed OPVS ANSVINI, that depicted St Christopher Preaching (destr. 1944; fragments survive) in the middle compartment of the right-hand wall of the Ovetari Chapel in the church of the Eremitani, Padua. Ansuino and others had been appointed in place of Giovanni d’Alemagna and Antonio Vivarini to produce six scenes from the Life of St Christopher after Giovanni’s death in 1450. Scholars have identified the ‘Ansuyn depentore’ of the Ovetari document with the Ansuyn da Furlì mentioned by Marcantonio Michiel as Filippo Lippi’s and Niccolo Pizzolo’s collaborator in the decoration (1434–7; destr.) of the chapel of the Podestà, Padua. The style of the Ovetari fresco is fairly close to that developed in the workshops of Pizzolo and Mantegna around 1450. Schmarsow assigned to Ansuino the two scenes in the lunette at the top of the right-hand wall of the Ovetari Chapel depicting St Christopher and the Devil and St Christopher Taking Leave of the King. Longhi and Zeri, however, have assigned the latter to Girolamo di Giovanni da Camerino.
