Malerin, Bildhauerin, Filmemacherin und Performance-Künstlerin Yayoi Kusama (japanisch, geb. 1929) ist eine bekannte Künstlerin der Avantgarde. Kusama ist für ihre immer wiederkehrenden Motive und psychedelischen Bilder bekannt, die Themen wie Psychologie, Feminismus, Besessenheit, Sex, Erschaffung, Zerstörung und Selbstreflexion aufgreifen. Kusama wurde in Matsumoto City geboren und begann im Alter von 10 Jahren zu malen. Aufgrund einer Kindheit, die durch Vernachlässigung und Unterdrückung geprägt war, litt Kusama schon in jungen Jahren unter Halluzinationen. Diese Erscheinungen bestanden aus Punkten und Mustern, die ihre Umgebung umhüllten, was vermutlich ihr Werk stark beeinflusst hat. Inspiriert von einem Brief der Künstlerin Georgia O'Keeffe zog Kusama nach New York, um dort ihre Karriere als Künstlerin zu verfolgen. Im Laufe des nächsten Jahrzehnts ist Kusama Mitglied der umstrittenen New Yorker Avantgarde-Bewegung und arbeitete wie besessen an ihrer Infinity Nets-Serie, die aus Gemälden und Skulpturen besteht, die sich mit einem endlos wirkenden, gleichförmigem Netzmuster beschäftigt.

In den nächsten Jahren inszenierte Kusama aufwendige Happenings in New York City, wie zum Beispiel das Einbrechen in den Skulptur-Garten des Museum of Modern Art zusammen mit nackten, bemalten Assistenten der Künstlerin. In den 1960ern stellte Kusama ihre Arbeiten mit Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg und anderen bekannten Künstlern der Avantgarde aus. Bevor sie in den frühen 1970ern nach Japan zurückkehrte, lebte Kusama in einer psychiatrischen Klinik in der sie surreale Kurzgeschichten und Gedichte schrieb. Später kehrte sie zu ihren ursprünglichen Themen in der Malerei und der Installationskunst zurück, wie die Erstellung eines Zimmers voller Spiegel in denen sich ihre ikonografischen Polka Dots und Infinity Nets spiegeln. Nachdem sie Japan auf der Biennale in Venedig im Jahr 1993 repräsentiert hatte, erhielt Kusamas Werk große Anerkennung von der internationalen Kunstwelt. Sie wurde mit dem Orden der Künste und der Literatur von dem französischen Ministerium für Kultur sowie mit dem Praemium Imperiale der Japanese Art Association ausgezeichnet. In den nächsten Jahren bekam Kusama viele Aufträge zur Erstellung großer öffentlicher Skulpturen, ebenso veröffentliche sie eine Vielzahl an Filmen und Dokumentationen, die jüngste im Jahr 2008. Im selben Jahr wurde Kusama zur meistverkauften lebenden Künstlerin ernannt, ihre Werke brachten in Auktionen Rekordpreise ein. Die Künstlerin lebt und arbeitet in Tokio.
