William Kentridge (südafrikanisch, geb. 1955) ist ein Filmemacher, Zeichner und Bildhauer und der Sohn von Sydney Kentridge, einer der führenden südafrikanischen Anti-Apartheid-Anwälte. Nach dem Studium der Politik und Geschichte Afrikas an der Universität von Witwatersrand in Johannesburg von 1973 bis 1976 studierte Kentridge Kunst an der Johannesburg Art Foundation (1976 – 1978) und der École Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Sein Interesse am Theater, besonders im Schauspiel und Design, beeinflusste seinen künstlerischen Stil und er verband seine Zeichnungen mit dem Film. Kentridges Pastell- und Kohlezeichnungen wurden oft als Studien für Animationsfilme verwendet.

Seine Werke wurden durch Satiriker inspiriert, darunter Honoré Daumier (französisch, 1808 – 1879), Francisco de Goya (spanisch, 1746 – 1828) und William Hogarth (britisch, 1697 – 1764). Bis zu den 1990er Jahren erlangte Kentridge ein internationales Publikum und einen renommierten Ruf. Seine Arbeiten wurden in Einzelausstellungen in vielen Museen gezeigt, darunter im Museum of Modern Art in New York, in der Albertina in Wien, im San Francisco Museum of Modern Art und im Philadelphia Museum of Art. Seit den 1980er Jahren wurde Kentridge mit verschiedenen Preisen, wie dem Kaiserring-Preis, dem Carnegie Prize, dem Standard Bank Young Artist Award und dem Red Ribbon Award für Short Fiction ausgezeichnet. Er lebt und arbeitet in Johannesburg, Südafrika.
