Die Werke von Liu Bolin (chinesisch, geb. 1973) sind eine Kombination aus Performance, Fotografie und Protestaktionen. In seinen Performance-Werken Camouflage passte er sich selbst mithilfe von Farbe auf seinem gesamten Körper der Hintergrundstruktur eines Motives so an, dass er auf der Fotografie mit dem Hintergrund zu verschmelzen vermag. Liu besuchte das Shandong Arts Institute und machte später seinen MFA im Fachbereich Skulptur an der Central Academy of Fine Arts in Peking. Für seine Werke wählt Liu häufig Symbole der chinesischen Kulturrevolution und der Veränderungen im Land seit dem Sturz der Mao Zedong Regime.

Bis zu zehn Stunden dauert es, bis er sich von seinen Assistenten komplett mit Farbe bemalen lässt, um sich für seine Werke den gewählten Hintergründen anzupassen. Diese Hintergründe sind sehr unterschiedlich, von den Trümmern eines Erdbebens bis zu einem kommunistischen Manifest, das auf eine Mauer gekritzelt ist. Er stellt seine Werke als Metaphern der Anonymität und Ächtung dar, die er als zeitgenössischer Künstler in China teilweise erfahren muss. Nachdem chinesische Beamte sein Atelier 2005 geschlossen haben, bekamen seine Werke einen noch politischeren Bezug. Der Künstler bezeichnete sie als „einen stillen Protest … einen Protest gegen den Staat.“ Liu stellte seine Werke u.a. in Peking, Shanghai, Paris, New York, Miami und in vielen weiteren Städten weltweit aus. Er lebt und arbeitet in Peking.
