Diane Arbus (amerikanisch, 1923–1971) ist eine der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Fotografinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Besonders bekannt ist sie für ihre Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien von Kindern, Künstlern und berühmten Persönlichkeiten sowie ihre Porträts von Menschen abseits der konventionellen Gesellschaft. Arbus wurde in New York geboren und kam durch ihren Ehemann Allan Arbus (amerikanisch, 1918–2013) zur Fotografie. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg waren die beiden zusammen im Bereich Modefotografie erfolgreich. Nach der Scheidung von ihrem Mann arbeitete Arbus alleine als Fotografin weiter und arbeite für Alexei Brodowitsch, dem Art Director des Modemagazins Harper’s Bazaar und auch für den Künstler Richard Avedon (amerikanisch, 1923–2004).

Zu Beginn der 1960er Jahre erstellte Arbus Porträts von Clowns, Tänzern, Zirkusartisten und Transvestiten, für die sie große Anerkennung erhielt. Bekannt ist Arbus auch für ihre Aufnahmen von Kindern und Porträts berühmter Persönlichkeiten und Straßenszenen. Arbus erhielt zwei Guggenheim-Stipendien um sie zu fördern und sie lehrte an der Parsons School of Design und an der Rhode Island School of Design.

1971, auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere, begann sie Selbstmord. 1972 zeigte das Museum of Modern Art eine Retrospektive ihrer Arbeiten und die Aperture Foundation veröffentlichte einen begleitenden Katalog. Die Aperture Monografie wurde mehr als 12 Mio. Mal verkauft. Ein Jahr nach ihrem Tod wurde Arbus als erste Fotografin ausgewählt, um Amerika bei der Biennale in Venedig zu vertreten.
