Reception & Silent Auction: Saturday, June 4 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm
We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Richard Levy Gallery with What I Saw, selections of Richard Levy's own personal photographs. Whether the photographs are taken in Africa, India, Spain, Albuquerque, or countless other locations, these images show the keenly clean aesthetic for which Richard Levy and his gallery are known.
These sleek, quiet, and often quirky images bring our attention to subtle details that permeate our lives. From the birds-eye view shot of garbage men in France, dressed head to toe in green, as they collect green trash bins, with their green trash truck, or to an empty subway escalator with florescent lights that shine down from above, Levy brings our attention to fine details and patterns from around the globe.
Inseparable from his camera, Richard Levy approaches photography as more than just a hobby, its a way of life. As a teenager Levy built a darkroom in a closet of his parents house and learned how to develop his first photographs. He later moved to Albuquerque and studied with Beaumont Newhall at the University of New Mexico. Since then he has cultivated his discerning eye creating images that offer us a compelling look into what he saw.
On Saturday, June 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm, the gallery is hosting a silent auction of photographs from What I Saw to benefit local arts non-profit 516 ARTS and Seed2Need -a great volunteer organization that provides fresh produce to local food pantries. Please join us for this event, celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Richard Levy Gallery, and give back to our community!
The Project Room showcases over 500 vintage postcards from Richard Levy's own collection (many of which came from his days on skates at the Silver Sunbeam). This exhibit spans from turn of the century to contemporary, including a large assortment from vintage Albuquerque, linen advertising, photographic, photo-manipulations, chromes, hand painted, airbrushed and countless other gems. This is a unique opportunity to view selections from one of the most extensive postcard collections in New Mexico.
