Andréhn-Schiptjenko at Art Basel Miami Beach –
a solo presentation of Martin Jacobson

Please join us in our booth E 10 where we are proud to present an installation by Martin Jacobson consisting of paintings, objects and light.

Martin Jacobson (SWE, b. 1978) has in the recent years following his graduation from Malmö Art Academy in Malmö, Sweden received both critical acclaim and curatorial recognition. He was invited by Elmgreen/Dragset to the exhibition The Collectors in the Danish and Nordic Pavilions at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and by David Elliot to The Beauty of Distance at The Sydney Biennale in 2010. He currently has a solo exhibition, The Traveller’s Guide to the Other Side, until January 12th 2012 at Sala Veronicas/La Conservera, Centro de Arte Contemporaneo in Murcia, Spain, accompanied by a catalogue.

As in his previous works, Jacobson’s new large-scale paintings are based on his own collages. These collages are assembled from images he finds at flea markets and antique shops, selected to fit the interests and myths he pursues. The works, shown for the first time at Art Basel Miami Beach, depict empty scenes similar to backdrops in an abandoned theatre or unfinished dioramas. The colours used are bright Technicolour and the surface is built up with a myriad of lines creating an impression of radiating artificial light. By using only the four primary colours Jacobson creates effects similar to those of a theatre stage, further underlining the staged quality of these motifs. Martin Jacobson works are often made in relation to Walter Benjamin and especially his text ”Origin of the German Tragic Drama” were Benjamin discusses the baroque tragedy and the allegory as a conception of life.

The installation Photosynthesis I consists of a monochrome white floral arrangement placed on a black table. The white plastic plants and flowers are artificially coloured by three coloured spotlights, creating a still life where form and colour have been separated. According to Jacobson the work deals with the notion of the artist as illusionist, trickster and god-impersonator.
