Yellow Brick Road – der Titel nimmt Bezug auf den gelben Ziegelsteinweg aus der Novelle „The wonderful Wizard of Oz“ von L. F. Baum. Die 1900 entstandene Geschichte wurde zahlreich neu verfasst und verfilmt. Reale Straßen wurden nach dem gelben Ziegelsteinweg benannt und 1973 hielt er Einzug in die Popkultur - mit dem Album „Goodbye Yellow Brick Road“ und dem gleichnamigen Song von Elton John. Die Vielzahl der surrealen, märchenhaften und politischen Interpretationen fließen in die figürliche und bunte Bilderwelt von Czapla ein. Die Elemente aus "Wizard of Oz" treffen auf Zitate unterschiedlichster Epochen der Kunstgeschichte bis hin zur Bildsprache moderner Medien. Sie verschmelzen zu phantastischen Gemälden, in denen Menschen, Tiere und kuriose Mischwesen posen. In einigen der großformatigen Szenerien portraitiert sich der Künstler auch selbst, bewusst in in der Tradition der alten Meister.

Simon Czapla, 1983 in Konstanz geboren, studierte 2005 bis 2010 Malerei an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe an der Außenstelle Freiburg und schloss sein Studium 2011 als Meisterschüler von Prof. Leni Hoffmann ab. Noch während seines Studiums erhielt er den Akademie-Förderpreis der Stadt Freiburg (2008) und der Stadt Konstanz (2011). Seine Bilder wurden überregional bereits in mehreren Einzelausstellungen gezeigt und konnten in internationale Sammlungen vermittelt werden.
Die kommende Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Helga Maria Bischoff präsentiert Simon Czaplas neuste Werke, die 2012 zum Thema "Yellow Brick Road" entstanden sind.

Simon Czapla: Yellow Brick Road

Yellow Brick Road – the name is, of course, a reference to the novel “The wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. The story, written in 1900, served as the material for countless stage adaptations and a Hollywood film. Real streets have been named after the famous road and in 1973 entered the annals of pop history with the album and song “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John. Countless surreal, fairytale-like and political interpretations flow into the figurative and colourful imagery of Czapla. The elements of “The Wizard of Oz” combine with references to the most diverse art epochs all the way down to the graphic vocabulary of modern media. They merge to fantastical paintings in which people, animals and curious hybrid creatures reside. In some of the large-format scenes the artist is also portrayed, consciously referencing the tradition of the Old Masters.

"As an artist, Czapla slips into the role of Puck in Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. He positions his imagery between unfathomable chasms and Elysian fields: Simon Czapla, alias Puck transforms the human figure to animal and the animal to human. Simon Czapla, born in Constance in 1983 studied fine art at the State Academy of Fine Art Karlsruhe in the Freiburg department from 2005 to 2010. He graduated with a master’s degree, completed under Prof. Leni Hoffmann. During his studies he received the Academy Prize from the City of Freiburg (2008) and the City of Constance (2011). His paintings have been exhibited nationally at several solo exhibitions and have also entered international collections.
The upcoming solo exhibition in the Gallery Helga Maria Bischoff shows Simon Czapla’s most recent works, inspired by the “Yellow Brick Road”.
