LEADAPRON is pleased to announce the exhibition Farrah Karapetian: Accessory to Protest
curated by Diane Rosenstein. Farrah Karapetianʼs photograms and constructed negatives
represent the Eight Items of “Necessary Clothing and Accessories” listed in a pamphlet
instructing novice protesters in the mechanics of civilian unrest. The flyer was widely distributed in
Egypt prior to the Fall of Prime Minister Hosni Mubarak. In constructing the objects that serve as
her “negatives” for these photograms and in recording the negatives at multiple moments in the
darkroom, Karapetian extends the process of photography into sculpture and performance. This
work presages “Student Body Politic,” Karapetian's national investigation of issues of
representation in politics and image making, engaging the photogram to reconsider iconic images
of protest.
Farrah Karapetian works with photography in a sculptural field, emphasizing the plasticity of the
medium of photography, the constructed nature of imagery, and the pathos of everyday life. She
earned her MFA from UCLA (2008) and BA in fine art from Yale University (2000). A MacDowell
Fellow (2010) and an artist-in-residence at the Wende Museum and Archive of the Cold War
(2009), she has had solo exhibitions and projects with Sandroni.Rey (CA), Geoffrey Young (MA),
and the Kantor Gallery (NY), as well as group exhibitions internationally. She lectures frequently
at venues such as Art Center College of Design, USC, Otis College of Art and Design, and UCLA,
and her writing has appeared in publications such as Speculative Structures (Mark Batty
Publisher 2011), Whitehot Magazine, and the Brooklyn Rail.
