StolenSpace is proud to present the premier London solo show from renowned Californian street artist Buff Monster.
Featuring paintings on board, installation work and also the release of a limited edition print
Celebrating 10 years of the king of pink Buff Monster has created a brand new body of work expanding on and revisiting
familiar themes that he has become synonymous with. The artist has become famous for his signature candy pink
bubbles, drips, ice cream sundaes, breasts and Japanese-inspired cutesy winged characters (also called Buff Monsters)
which bring a smile to the face. As well as his highly collectable fine art paintings Buff Monster is known all over the
world for his collectible toys and design projects.
‘I’ve always painted squirts and boobs and drips, and I’ve always considered them landscape paintings; oozing
landscapes. Of course, I use a very limited color palette: Buff Monster pink, along with a couple other shades of
custom-mixed pink, and white, black and grays. For me, color is very important and I think that using a very limited
palette serves to distill the essence of the expression. Formally, the paintings are rendered with great detail and are
created in the superflat method of painting. I take great care to keep the paintings as flat as possible; making sure the
surfaces is as flat and perfect as I think is appropriate. I use very fine sandpaper along the way to guarantee a smooth
surface’.
About The Artist:
Buff Monster lives in Hollywood and cites heavy metal
music, ice cream and Japanese culture as major
influences. The color pink, a symbol of confidence,
individuality and happiness, is present in everything he
creates.
Buff Monster’s creative endeavors began by putting up
thousands of hand-silkscreened posters across Los
Angeles and in far-away places. His frequent poster
missions developed into a productive street art career,
and he now works on fine art paintings, collectible toys
and select design projects. The Buff Monster's primary
canvas is the city of Los Angeles. Here he uses his
signature ice cream sundaes, breasts and little winged
characters (also called Buff Monsters) as a candy coating
for the less glossy surfaces of the City of Angels. LA is also
home to the porn industry, and The Buff has been known
to paint directly onto the bodies of porn stars at Hustler
shoots. He’s also painted a room at the Hotel Des Arts in
San Francisco.
His work has been shown in galleries worldwide, often
accompanied by large installations. Buff Monster has
released numerous signature vinyl toys through leading
vinyl toy companies, and has many other projects in the
works. His art has been published in a variety of
magazines, websites, newspapers and books, including
Juxtapoz, Paper, Nylon, Cool Hunting, Angeleno, The
Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, The New York Times,
and many more. He was recently featured in Banksy’s
movie Exit Through the Gift Shop. Buff Monster works
tirelessly day and night to spread happiness, joy and a love
of pink.
