Ellen Kooi: Días Transparentes

On Thursday 8 November, “Transparent Days” a solo exhibition of the prestigious gallery artist Ellen Kooi opens at the camara oscura art gallery.
Following the undeniable success of her retrospective at the Institut Néerlandais of Paris in November 2010, we have the chance in Spain to enjoy a Kooi’s new project in which the artist overcame a period of time of a very low production that, at the same time, exceptionally improved the quality of the new artworks.
The new images by Ellen Kooi have experienced a change, or rather an evolution, shoud we compare them to her latest “Borrowed Landscapes” exhibition at the PhotoEspaña ’09 Festival. The smaller details both in composition and narrative pulse are characteristic in her work, and also a comeback to forest and water as scenarios that she always articulate as main characters of the narrative. On the other hand, we find out new elements quite uncommon in her work like high or nonexistent skylines which close the composition and set an atmosphere lost in thought, tense, and claustrophobic.
We should not forget that the work by Ellen Kooi unfolds a harsh encounter between mankind and nature, between each person and his/her environment, a complex and troubled relationship that today we must rethink more than ever and that is still to be reinvented. Moreover, her images reflect a peace and a certain Nordic coldness, only apparent since below that mantle of quietness a number of intense sensations are hidden: restlessness, isolation, surprise, or fear.
Kooi’s photographic images are much more than just an individual expression -as an artist- but a collective expression, a national spirit in which we see ourselves reflected regardless of not being Dutch.

El próximo jueves 8 de noviembre se inaugura en camara oscura la exposición individual “Días Transparentes” de la prestigiosa artista de la galería Ellen Kooi.
Tras el éxito incontestable de su antológica en Paris celebrada en el Institut Néerlandais en noviembre de 2010 volvemos a disfrutar en España de un nuevo proyecto en el que la artista ha logrado sobreponerse a una temporada con una muy escasa producción, pero que sin embargo ha ido en beneficio de una calidad excepcional de las nuevas imágenes.
Los nuevos trabajos fotográficos de Ellen Kooi han experimentado un cambio, o más bien una evolución, si los comparamos con su última exposición “Borrowed Landscapes” en PhotoEspaña ’09. Los pequeños detalles en la composición y el pulso narrativo son característicos en su obra, y podemos observar por un lado una vuelta al bosque y al agua como escenarios que siempre se articulan como personajes principales de esa narración. Por otro lado, encontramos nuevos componentes nada habituales en su obra como las líneas de horizonte altas o inexistentes, que cierran la composición y le dan un aire más ensimismado, tenso, y claustrofóbico.
No debemos olvidar que la obra de Ellen Kooi desgrana un proteico pulso entre el hombre y la naturaleza, entre cada persona y su entorno, una compleja y conflictiva relación que hoy en día nos replanteamos más que nunca y que está por reinventar. Por otra parte, sus imágenes reflejan una paz y cierta frialdad nórdica solo aparentes, ya que bajo ese manto de quietud se esconden una serie de intensas sensaciones que van desde la inquietud, el aislamiento, la sorpresa, o el temor.
El trabajo de Ellen Kooi es mucho más que una expresión individual -como artista- sino una expresión colectiva, un espíritu nacional con el que no por no pertenecer a los Países Bajos dejamos de vernos reflejados.
