We are proud to announce an exhibition at our Newcastle gallery with Mik Artistik from 16 September to 21 October. Mik Artistik will be exhibiting a collection of new paintings and will also be playing a gig with his band, Mik Artistik's Ego Trip, in our gallery.
Mik Artistik is a Leeds-based artist, musician, comedian, writer and performance poet. He graduated from Bradford College and, despite these other outlets, describes painting as his original passion.
In 1983 Mik Artistik began his Brown Paper Bag series, where he would approach strangers, including, once, Paul Weller, and ask if he could draw their portrait in biro on a paper bag. He would then sell the paper bag to the sitter. Mik Artistik has exhibited extensively throughout his career, including Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield. He has had a recent show of large oil paintings at the Playhouse, Bradford, and in 2003 exhibited a self portrait, Self Portrait with CD at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Mik Artistik’s oil on canvases draw widely on childhood experiences, and often have a surreal, stream of conscious quality. They seem deliberately naive, and the artist’s autobiographical approach has been likened to artists including Billy Childish and Vic Reeves.
Mik Artistik was runner up to the comedian Peter Kay in a Channel 4 Comedy contest in Edinburgh, he has appeared in Kay’s Phoenix Nights, and has garnered critical acclaim for his band, Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip. In addition to being the subject of a recent documentary; Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip have been played by Jarvis Cocker on his BBC Radio 6 show, and have performed at festivals and events including London Fashion Week, Glastonbury, Latitude and Port Eliot.
