Reception: Thursday, December 27, 5 – 8PM
Tayloe Piggott Gallery is pleased to present “Flora,” a group show featuring the work of acclaimed
artists Donald Baechler, Ross Bleckner, Squeak Carnwath, and Donald Sultan. The exhibition will open
on December 14, followed by the gallery’s annual holiday reception – Champagne and Chocolates –
on Thursday, December 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to join the gallery in celebrating the
holiday season and to see the work of these influential contemporary artists.
The exhibition was curated by Tayloe Piggott, who sought to bring together a diverse body of work by
contemporary artists that features strong visual statements
DONALD BAECHLER, b. 1956
FLORA will include a bronze sculpture and four prints by the artist Donald Baechler. Throughout his
prominent career, Baechler has remained committed to a universal, animated aesthetic with
particular emphasis on quality of line, form, and balance. His pieces typically include a central iconic
image that interacts with assorted collaged and painted background elements.
ROSS BLECKNER, b. 1949
FLORA will include three prints by Ross Bleckner. Time and mortality have been a prevailing theme of
Bleckner's work. Glowing and contemplative, his work blends abstraction with recognizable symbols
from the natural world to create meditations on perception, transcendence and loss. His large-scale
prints begin profuse and brightly colored, but are then scraped away and abstracted until they
become blurs of paint and human cells floating in dark color fields.
SQUEAK CARNWATH, b. 1947
FLORA will include a new mixed media work on paper by Squeak Carnwath. Within her work,
Carnwath constructs a unique vocabulary of pictographs and hieroglyphs using iconic images –
flowers, candelabras, letters and words – that constitute a personal index of meaning. The repetition of
symbols, shapes, and colors, within each painting and across her body of work, is meditative; her
objects become mantras through the act of painting them over and over.
DONALD SULTAN, b. 1951
FLORA will include two recent prints by Donald Sultan. Sultan is best known for his large-scale
compositions of fruit, flowers, dominoes and other objects, set against a dark, tar-black background.
The multiple layers create texture and subsequent richness apparent in his paintings and prints. His
images are weighty, with equal emphasis on both negative and positive areas.
